Bihar General Election to the Legislative Assembly 2025 |
Bihar, one of India’s most populous states, holds its Legislative Assembly elections every five years. In 2025, Bihar is gearing up for its 18th Legislative Assembly elections. Given the state’s complex social, economic, and political dynamics, these elections carry high stakes — for local governance, for caste and community alignments, for central-state relationships, and for larger national political narratives.

General Election to the Legislative Assembly of Bihar 2025
|
Key Facts & Dates |
| - All 243 seats of the Bihar Legislative Assembly.
|
| |
| - Two phases
- Phase 1: 121 constituencies on 6 November 2025
- Phase 2: 122 constituencies on 11 November 2025
|
| - Scheduled for 14 November 2025.
|
| - The 17th Bihar Assembly’s term ends on 22 November 2025. New Assembly must be in place before then.
|
Background & Political Climate |
- The last assembly elections were in 2020. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) had formed the government then.
- Since then, there have been shifting alliances. Most notably, JD(U) under Nitish Kumar has oscillated between alliances with BJP (as part of NDA) and the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) which includes RJD, Congress, and others.
- Given the demographic, social, caste, economic, and developmental challenges in Bihar — unemployment, infrastructure, healthcare, law & order, etc. — these are major election issues.
|
Major Alliances & Players |
- NDA (National Democratic Alliance): Includes BJP, JD(U), and other regional allies. Their campaign will pivot on governance, delivery of schemes, and projecting stability.
- Mahagathbandhan / INDIA bloc (Grand Alliance): Led by RJD with Tejashwi Yadav, along with Congress, Left parties, aiming to challenge the incumbents by highlighting unmet promises, local issues, and perhaps anti-incumbency sentiments.
- Smaller and newer parties also matter, both for their potential seat wins and for their effect on vote split.
|
Issues & Themes to Watch |
- Voter list revision: Bihar underwent a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. This always brings scrutiny over how clean the rolls are, inclusion/exclusion of voters, and concerns about disenfranchisement.
- Festival considerations: Diwali and Chhath are major festivals in Bihar; Election Commission took these into account while scheduling elections.
- Legislative performance: Reports have noted that the outgoing assembly sat relatively few days each year, passed many bills quickly, often without extensive committee review. For many voters, this raises questions about accountability and legislative scrutiny.
- Ground issues: Unemployment, basic infrastructure (roads, electricity, water), health, education, and caste/community grievances continue to be huge. Local governance, roads, agricultural distress, rural development will likely be significant determinants.
